Knoxville TN - Frankfort KY
Day 2
Refreshed from a good night's sleep and a nice breakfast I took off from Knocksville TN. to Frankfort KY. , which is the state's capital.
Click here to learn more about it. It's a fun way to learn geography!
This leg took me three and a half hours; again enjoying great weather. The more I drove towards north the less I saw the arrival of Spring. It was like going back in time! But there were beautiful trees already in full bloom.
| Rest Area |
the rest area highlighted Kentucky on the building's windows.
It's horses, and beautiful nature.
A very special treat was the
Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea
I had not forgotten the name Berea. Many years ago I had a student at Appalachian State University who told me everything about Berea, Ky. He had been accepted to become an intern at Berea College, a unique place, where students study, produce arts and crafts, all tuition free!
The visit to the Center was a real treat! It is here where I bought the art piece that will bring back memories of my road trip to Iowa.

Charlotte NC - Knoxville TN
Day 1

I left my home around 10:00 am on April 18th, and I knew this first leg would take me at least 5 hours. I had to climb up the Smokey Mountains to get to Knoxville... there was much construction on the road.
My car was packed with a bag of clothes, a painting for Hans and family, a pajama I bought for Sasha that was too small hoping to return it in Indiana, snacks and water for the journey.
I had made hotel reservation at the Hampton Inn Knoxville-East and checked in electronically before I left. This process allowed me to arrive, go to the reception desk, give my name and automatically receive my room key.

| My stuff I needed for the road |
There was beautiful sunshine and wonderful scenery, especially after I passed Asheville. I took my time driving up the Smokeys letting faster traffic aways pass me.
I was not using the printed directions, but my iPhone's GPS, which never failed me during the whole trip.
Once I arrived at the Hampton Inn, I put on my bathing suit and went to the indoor pool. I was all alone there and enjoyed the water immensely
As I had told Andrea before I left on this journey, I was "listening" to my body and enjoying the fact that my new knee was reacting so well... I think that was the most important challenge for me after so many month of pain...
Since I had brought food from home for the first day, I dined in my room, got into the luxurious bed with fresh white linens, turned on the news and set the alarm for 8:00am (there was no rush to get up earlier)...

Charlotte NC to Marion IA
Planning my Trip
Nine month ago I had surgery on my right knee [total replacement], which kept me at home [and in pain] for quite some time. Every day I am feeling better and stronger and ready to fulfill some [crazy] plans.
After dreaming about a cruise on the Mississippi River, and a cruise on the Danube [both too expensive], I decided to travel to Iowa by car, visit my family in Cedar Rapids, and on the way, get to know new parts of the U.S.A.
It will take me a total of five days to get to Iowa and another five days to return home.
Maps are printed, hotels are booked, my car is ready... and so am I.
Every day I will drive no more than 4 hours, stay in nice and comfortable hotels [do check my Facebook pages], view interesting places and sleep-in every morning...
I chose to write the blog in English, so that my grandchildren are able to read it. But, depending on my mood, there will be some passages in German and Spanish along the way.
